Hurricane season starts in Florida on June 1 and goes through November 30. The NOAA has issued a prediction of up to 25 named storms for the 2024 season- the average is 14 per season. Are you ready? Here are some hurricane prep tips from Paul:

Create a Hurricane Supply Kit

Having all the most important supplies in one place helps you find everything you need during a hurricane. Here are some items I like to keep in my hurricane supply kit.

  • Water

  • Non-perishable foods

  • A cooler (and ice packs in your freezer)

  • Any food/supplies you need for your pets

  • A first aid kit (and make sure to refill any prescription medications a few days early so you don't run out during a hurricane)

  • Flashlights and batteries

  • Can opener

  • Lighter/Matches

  • A waterproof case with important papers/ cash in case of power outages

  • Blankets

  • Rain Gear

Develop a Family Plan:

  • Communication: Establish a family communication plan to stay in touch if separated. Decide on a meeting place and have an out-of-state contact person.

  • Evacuation Routes: Know your local evacuation routes and have a plan for where you will go if you need to evacuate. Keep your car's gas tank full .

Secure Your Home:

  • Windows and Doors: Install storm shutters or board up windows with plywood. Reinforce doors and garage doors .

  • Outdoor Items: Bring in outdoor furniture, decorations, and anything else that could become a projectile in high winds .

  • Trees and Landscaping: Trim trees and shrubs to reduce the risk of branches falling on your house .

Stay Informed:

  • Weather Updates: Monitor local news and weather reports for updates on the hurricane’s path and strength.

  • Emergency Alerts: Sign up for emergency alerts through your local government or weather apps .

Power and Water Preparations:

  • Backup Power: Consider purchasing a generator and know how to use it safely. Charge all electronic devices before the storm hits .

  • Water Supply: Fill bathtubs and other containers with water for sanitation and flushing toilets if the water supply is interrupted .

Pet and Animal Safety:

  • Pet Supplies: Ensure you have enough food, water, and medication for pets. Include a leash, collar, and crate if evacuation is necessary.

  • Shelter Arrangements: Identify pet-friendly shelters or make arrangements with friends or family outside the storm area .

Community Resources:

  • Local Resources: Know the location of nearby shelters and community resources. Some communities have specific plans for those with special needs or disabilities .

  • Volunteering: Consider helping neighbors, especially the elderly or those with disabilities, with their preparations .

Insurance and Documentation

  • Insurance Check: Review your insurance policies and understand your coverage. Take photos or videos of your home's interior and exterior for documentation.

  • Important Documents: Store important documents in a waterproof container or digitally with backups.

By following these steps, you can better protect yourself, your family, and your property during hurricane season. Always stay updated with the latest information and be ready to act quickly if conditions change.

Thank you for choosing me for your home insurance. I am here to help protect you, your family and all that matters most. I'm always available to look at your coverage and evaluate the best options to suit your needs and budget.
